A GP has been required to perform CPR twice in three weeks! Luckily both times the victims, players from the Northern Suburbs Football Association (who both suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrests) were able to be revived with the administration of CPR and then with the use of a defibrillator.
In the first instance the team had forgotten to bring their defibrillator to the grounds. The victim was lucky that there was one at the oval. If this hadn’t been the case, the outcome may have been very different.
This is a timely reminder to us all that we need to check firstly whether your Club has a defibrillator, whether your Club needs an “away” defibrillator and whether your Clubs defibrillator has recently been checked.
The CEO of the Northern Suburbs Football Club knows all too well the importance of Clubs having defibrillators installed. In 2015 and 2016 they had lost a player and an umpire to SCA.
We now have 40 plus defibrillators across our grounds, clubs and teams. Three lives saved in the last 15 months with the use of a defibrillator absolutely critical to survival on each occasion.
“The machines, of course, are useless without the proper intervention of willing first responders and we are very thankful to all of the bystanders who have assisted in each of these incidents. It takes bravery and courage to jump in and act when a life is at stake so we are indebted to Dr John Galicek and all those who have offered their assistance in any of these incidents”.
For your athletes, volunteers, parents, supporters and coaches – don’t wait until it’s too late. Install a defibrillator in your sports club today.
